Karoo road trip In April 2008 we set off on our inaugural family road trip. With the five of us and supplies for a self-catering trip inside the vehicle, and 4 bikes hanging off the rear, we covered 3,700 kilometres in 2 weeks, of which more than 2,000 was on dirt. The trip took us from the Winterberg mountains in the east, through the heart of the Groot Karoo, into the Baviaanskloof and on to the Klein Karoo. We started and ended with the passage of cold fronts which brought snow to the mountains. And yet only 2 days after having a high of 3 degrees, we drove into Graaff-Reinet in 31 degrees.
